Day 8 - fine.

day 8 winds

A glorious day lies ahead for much of Britain and Ireland today as a ridge of high pressure takes control. The fronts that brought so much rain to parts of southern Britain yesterday are now moving across mainland Europe.

Any early cloud and remaining light rain across southeast England this morning will soon move away, and then all areas will have a dry day with plenty of sunshine. There may be a few showers across the far northeast blown in on a brisk north-westerly wind, but even these will tend to ease away later today. The sunshine will help conditions to feel very pleasant with temperatures close to the seasonal norm.

These temperatures will fall away quickly tonight though under those clear skies. A widespread ground frost will form, especially in rural areas, and there may be a touch of air frost in places too. Later tonight, increasing cloud and breeze will help temperatures to rise again across Ireland and western Scotland in advance of the next weather system that's set to move in.

Looking ahead to tomorrow then, and it will be a fine but chilly start for many southern and eastern areas. However, cloud and rain will spread into many western areas, along with brisk winds. This rain will spread across the rest of the country during Friday night, leaving a mixture of sunshine and showers for the weekend, with some longer spells of rain in places too.
