Day 2 - cloudy with patchy rain in north

day 1 winds

A much cooler feel to the day today across most of Britain and Ireland as winds are now coming down from the north. The winds are mostly light for many, but towards northeast Scotland and down the eastern coastline of England they are quite brisk. The reason for the change to cooler conditions is a cold front that has been moving south overnight. This front is now crossing southern England, bringing little more than a band of cloud with it. So the cloud this morning across the south will move away quite readily, and then many areas will see sunny spells today. However, those winds are blowing a few showers in across north-eastern areas, and it will turn rather cloudy across much of Scotland by this afternoon with some showery rain - and even some snow over the tops of the mountains! Temperatures will be close to or just below normal for the start of October, with highs around the low to mid teens for many, but staying in single figures in the far north. All eyes are then focused towards the northwest of Scotland tonight as a deepening low winds itself up close to Iceland. This will bring increasingly damp conditions across many central and northern areas during tomorrow, with southern Britain remaining mostly dry with bright spells after a chilly start. During Friday night, heavy rain will sweep across the north, with gales developing too, and this is something we are watching carefully..
