Day 5 - much calmer.

day 5 winds

Looking at the synoptic charts today and it's a rather messy picture with weather fronts to the north, west and south of the UK. Meanwhile, a weak ridge lies across many areas, but it is fighting a losing battle against all those weather fronts that will slowly be taking over.

This means that it is a dry and chilly start for many areas, and there is a touch of frost in places too. However, there will be plenty of sunshine around too, especially over central areas. More cloud can be found towards the north, where a few scattered showers can be expected, and also over Ireland, where the cloud may be thick enough for a little rain later on today. Cloud is also thickening towards southern England as an area of rain is set to move northeast through the Channel, brushing southern coastal counties and southeast England. Temperatures everywhere won't be far from the norm, and it will feel pleasant enough in any sunshine.

The rain really gathers tonight in the southwest, becoming heavy in places. This rain will then move northeast across Wales, central, southern and northern parts of England. With another weather system towards the northwest of Scotland and Ireland, dry spells will become limited by the end of the night, with almost anywhere likely to see some rain at some point. This takes us into a unsettled Tuesday with rain or showers just about everywhere, and as we draw up some very warm and moist air from the southwest, some really quite heavy rain is likely in places. By the time we get to Wednesday, the heaviest rain is likely to be across southern and eastern England, with brighter and cooler weather to the north only slowly moving southwards - reaching most areas by Thursday.
